Planning Outfits for Your Family Photoshoot
Choosing outfits for your family photoshoot doesn't have to be difficult or expensive.
1. Start by Selecting a Cohesive Color Palette of one or two main colors, a few neutrals and incorporating cozy or elegant textures. This creates a unified look without everyone having to wear the same outfit. Comfort is key, especially for families with younger children.
Classic and Festive: Different shades of reds, greens, browns, and blues are timeless choices that evoke the holiday spirit.
Elegant Neutrals: For a sophisticated and modern look, stick to winter whites (ivory, champagne, tan), soft grays, navy and metallic accents.
Winter Wonderland: icy blues, navy blues, soft whites, and shimmering silvers create a serene, frosty aesthetic.
Jewel Tones: Rich hues like emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue and amethyst add a luxurious feel and pop beautifully in photos.
2. Mix Textures and Layers
Incorporating different fabrics adds depth and visual interest to your photos.
Fabrics to Use: Opt for cozy knits, soft flannel, luxurious velvet, corduroy, wool, or delicate lace.
Layering: Cardigans, vests, scarves, and coats are great for outdoor photos and allow for versatility during the session.
Avoid: Overly shiny or reflective fabrics, which can be distracting.
3. Coordinate or Match
Start with one piece: Begin with one person's outfit (often mom's, as it sets the tone) or a patterned item (like a plaid shirt) and build the rest of the family's outfits around those colors.
Use patterns thoughtfully: Pair patterns with solid colors to avoid a busy or cluttered look.
Accessorize: Use accessories like bows, scarves, or festive socks to tie the look together and add a touch of personality.
Different Style Looks
For photos indoor or a cozy at home look: Try knits, jeans, and plaids. This is also the perfect time for matching holiday pajamas or simple, comfortable sweaters for a relaxed, authentic feel.
For photos outdoor or a nature look: Focus on warm, layered outfits like flannels, scarves, and coats.
For a formal look: Choose elevated fabrics like velvet, linen, sequins, and lace. Dress in suits and dresses for a more elegant portrait.
Avoid overly bright/neon colors which can be harsh on camera and create an unbalanced look. Prioritize comfort, if anyone is tugging at their clothes or feeling self-conscious, it will show in the photos. Relax and get ready to have some fun with your family and to create beautiful images to cherish for years to come!
